I know that there a few different styles, almost like different fonts, for the kana. (I assume you’re not getting confused over katakana?) In fact just a week or so ago I found a website giving examples of a few different styles. Can’t think of it, but I’ll take a look and get back if I can find it again.

History of Japan, 1600 to 1900

At the beginning of the 17th century – around the time the European countries were colonizing much of the world – and despite occasional trade with the West, Japan was still extremely isolated from the rest of the world. During much of the 17th and 18th centuries, power was still in the hands of the shoguns, powerful leaders who controlled religion, economics and established a system of taxation, while at the same time, deliberately avoided conflicts with other countries. Around this time, most of the inhabitants were rice farmers, although there was also a well defined social structure.

However, the country was also undergoing significant changes. Commerce within the country began to flourish, becoming more important than the feuds that had been a part of the country for centuries. Reading and writing were considered important enough to be widely taught in schools, and the influence of the Chinese language on the Japanese vocabulary was strongly felt. If you are beginning to learn the Japanese language, much of the vocabulary you are studying has its roots in Chinese. Many artistic developments also took place, including two that Japan is still well known for today – the Kabuki style of theater and the distinctive wood block print.

In 1853, Matthew Perry, a commodore in the US navy arrived in Japan and demanded that the country be opened up, so it could trade with the rest of the world. Perry’s request was granted and the following year, Japan and the US signed the Treaty of Peace and Amity. Further commerce treaties were signed with various countries, although the Japanese regarded these as a sign of Western imperialism and would do so until the beginning of the 20th century. Another big change occurred in the mid 19th century when the last shogun ate, the Edo, fell and the emperor became the ruler of the country. Japanese is a difficult language to learn – however, learning to speak Japanese, without worrying or wanting to know how to write it right away, can be especially fast if you use the right tools and are dedicated.

Just like any language, Japanese seems more difficult than it is – this is largely because of the pronunciation of the language, the intonation and word emphasis. It is a very different language from English and this can be daunting. However, English is the most difficult language to learn how to speak, and you already know how to speak it – so Japanese will come quickly and easily for you as there are not as many exceptions or rules to the language as there are in English.

The fastest way to learn Japanese is by listening to native speakers talk. If you don’t know any native Japanese speakers, the Internet will be able to help you. Streaming videos and news casts are a great way to listen to Japanese native speakers and pick up the language properly. Also, by learning from the Internet on news casts with English subtitles, you are learning formal Japanese, instead of slang or layman Japanese.

As in English, there are slang terms and colloquialisms in Japanese that can be difficult to get rid of once you’ve learned how to speak them. It would be like speaking perfect, proper English all the time – without any contractions or slang terminology at all – and English is rife with slang terms and rule breakers. You already know that learning English in the slang would not be beneficial, so why would learning Japanese that way be any better? It wouldn’t – so it’s important to ensure that you’re learning the best Japanese possible to ensure your base knowledge of the language is strong and secure.

The Internet and native speakers of the Japanese language are your ticket to learning Japanese quickly, efficiently and effectively.
